The University of Hong Kong has an agreement with the above seventeen universities to accept a total of over 30 exchange students each year.

Students from the University of Hong Kong can attend these universities for one academic year or, in the case of some institutions, for one semester. While in Japan, you may study Japanese language and other courses selected in consultation with your academic advisors. You will be expected to complete all classwork assignments, tests and examinations to the satisfaction of these institutions.

During your year in Japan, you will pay the applicable tuition fees to the University of Hong Kong: no tuition fees are to be paid to the host university. However, you will be responsible for your living expenses. These universities will try to place you in their halls of residence ("dormitories"), or, failing this, will assist you in finding off‐campus accommodation. Upon returning to Hong Kong, you will resume your studies at the University of Hong Kong as a third year student.

Application Procedures: a recruitment announcement will be made during the first semester. (Application forms may be obtained from the School office or the Academic Secretariat). You will be interviewed as part of the selection process.

Costs: The cost of living in Japan is high. According to ICU figures, during one year of study a student can expect to spend at the very minimum HK$100,000 on living expenses, and that is a very conservative estimate. Living costs at Hitotsubashi and Soka are similar to those at other institutions. There is financial assistance available from the University of Hong Kong, the host universities, and some external sources, one of the most comprehensive of which is JASSO (Japan Student Service Organization), whose scholarships include a return airfare and a JPY80,000 monthly allowance (subject to change without notice). However, as this assistance is limited, and is offered on a competitive basis, students interested in this exchange programme must be prepared to cover these expenses themselves.

Credit Transfer: You may apply for the course credits earned as an exchange student to be transferred back to the University of Hong Kong. You may apply to do so by writing to the Faculty Office between May 1 and 31 before you return to Hong Kong. As each university has a different curriculum and syllabus, each application for credit transfer will be considered on an individual basis. To facilitate processing of your application, please provide the following information by downloading required forms (http://arts.hku.hk/download/ and http://www.japanese.hku.hk/files/credittransfer11.doc) and submitting them to the Faculty Office during the period specified above.
